This is both a functionality and safety issue. Try to designate passive and
active areas in your kitchen.Strategically postion the fridge, sink and hot plates
together with set down bench space to form a work triangle.
Ergonomics
Different bench height levels can save your back, the hotplate should be lower
than the preparation bench and the sink higher.
Storage
Large drawers and pull-out units are the preferred way of storage for anything
from pots to crockery to dry foods.
Lighting
Use task lighting to light work areas, like benches and the sink - avoid shadows.
The Construction and Detail
Paperwork
Check all paperwork thoroughly (contracts over $12,000 must have Home
Owners Warranty Insurance)
Ensure all choices have been made prior to commencement a detailed drawing and specifications carefully itemised are your guarantee that what you paid for is what you receive!!
Procedure of Renovation

If structural changes required then they are done next

The Fittings and Finishes
Dark coloured high gloss surfaces are stunning but hard to keep clean
Patterned and textured surfaces reflect less marks and streaks
Solid surfaces such as granite are extremely durable, however stone will
require some maintenance, cheap stone should be avoided
Solid reconstituted quartz provides a wide array of colour options
Ensure that edging materials on laminate and melamine doors are high quality and are properly applied
Vinyl wrap doors are durable but must be protected from heat sources
The bench edge profile chosen may impact on the shape of your benches
Ask your designer about the myriad of storage accessories and systems
that can make life easier such as revolving storage, rubbish systems, etc.
