Giving your home a lift inside need not be expensive. In fact, with just a few tricks here and there you can have a fresh new look without spending a fortune.
Whether you are building a new home or renovating keep your budget for value added fixtures to your home, such as kitchen, bathrooms, flooring and window coverings. These things are essential and all add value to your home. Paint is best kept neutral, however, if you want to add some drama and colour do a feature wall in one of the special paint finishes or even wallpaper (which is making a bit of a come back, with some lovely designs), this is easy to repaint over if ever you tire of the colour, trends change or you want to re sell. It is also an inexpensive way of adding your own pizzazz rather than tiling a bathroom with psychedelic tiles.
Kitchens and bathrooms are best kept neutral, be aware that trends change. Timber flooring is the best way to go, it never goes out of style and always looks elegant, simple and is easy to keep clean. Window coverings again are best kept neutral especially if you are investing in good quality fabrics and fittings. If you want to be adventurous with bold colours and patterns, perhaps use a coordinated fabric for bedding and cushions, even furniture, such as a lounge suite, which can look fantastic in bold colours or patterns and if trends change or you tire of the look, it is relatively inexpensive to have furniture reupholstered (the fabric gets worn after a few years in a lot of cases anyway). Don’t underestimate the difference good quality fabric used in cushions, bedding and furniture with lovely bold designs and lots of vibrant colour can make to a home.
Don’t despair if moving into a new or newly renovated home you feel that none of your existing furniture or favourite decorator items will suit the new look. Often it is as easy as introducing a few new items that tie in the old with the new. An interior decorator can often help you with this and save a lot of emotional and financial stress.
