Obvious reasons for installing safety barriers range from avoiding the following:
Injury
Drownings
Since January 31 1997, by law, all swimming pools and spas greater than 300mm deep must be guarded with safety barriers and fitted with self-locking / self-latching devices positioned at least 1.5m high. Gates of barriers must also swing outwards.
It is to your discretion that you ensure climbable objects are kept at least 1.2m radius away from the pool or spa. Climbable objects include pool equipment, outdoor furniture, pot plants, trees, ladders, ledges and so forth.
Failure to meet the Building Regulations could impose a fine of up to $500.
Please check with your local council to determine whether or not your pool barrier is in compliance with AS 1926.
